Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises”

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

by Eryl McCaffrey

Let me start out by saying that I think Anne Hathaway is an intelligent, multi-faceted young actress. However, sex appeal isn’t one of her most redeeming qualities. It’s impressive that she’s been able to play parts in highly esteemed films such as “Love and Other Drugs”  and “Rachel Getting Married”, but let’s face it she’s no Catwoman. She’s got the acting chops, but she’s lacking the sensuality and eroticism that a gig as Batman’s voluptuous/villainous  sidekick requires.

Hathaway officially confirmed the rumours during a recent appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” She’ll play Selina Kyle in the heavily anticipated conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy. The character’s feline alter ego is of course Catwoman. I would be lying if I said she’s going to do the comic book heroin justice. I can’t quite put my finger on it but, there’s something about Hathaway that I find obnoxiously irritating.

I hate to admit it but, I think my opinion of Anne Hathaway may have forever been tainted by her vomtastic role as the socially awkward, overzealous Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries films. Her recent interpretation of the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland didn’t win her any points in my book either. She delivered the infamous storybook lines with a painfully slow pace, all the while giving off the aroma of pretentiousness- the eau de toilette she must bathe in every morning.

Her past roles aside, Hathaway has some pretty big shoes to fill in the very near future. In 1992’s Batman Returns, Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the furry character with a vengeance. If that’s not setting the bar high then, what about Halle Berry’s Catwoman film in 2004? These two ladies sure knew how to rock that unforgiving black leather unitard with sophistication and novelty.

Nevertheless, as a die hard Batman fanatic I will still go and see the final chapter of the trilogy, Anne Hathaway or no Anne Hathaway. Besides, when she’s standing next to hunky welshman Christian Bale I’m sure I’ll hardly notice her. And who knows, maybe she’ll surprise me and all those other cynics out there. With a lot of help from her acting coaches and some dedicated hard work at pole dancing class she might just bring the meow to the 2012 version of Catwoman.

  1. I was with you until you said Halle Berry did a great job as Catwoman. She was god awful.

  2. I think the point was that Halle Berry rocked the outfit…which I think we can agree she did, at the very least
