Movie Review: “Avengers: Infinity War” – Dark and Dramatic

Avengers: Infinity War is the movie we’ve all been waiting for. It’s the culmination of a film journey begun 10 years ago, and the fan following has only grown with each superhero instalment. Marvel has accomplished something truly special and astounding by giving audiences movies and characters to love and follow on a long journey. And with this latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie, our favourite superheroes are finally brought together. It’s epic. It’s dark. It’ll leave you breathless.

Avengers: Infinity War picks up right where Thor: Ragnarok left off. Thor’s ship is intercepted by Thanos who hunts for the infinity stones. What follows is our beloved heroes trying to stop Thanos from gaining ultimate power by collecting all the stones. We see new alliances and tech, and the Avengers face the greatest threat they’ve ever known. Strength will be tested. The universe is in extreme danger. And all that stands between Thanos and his goal are the Avengers.

“He’s not a dude. You’re a dude. This is a MAN. A handsome, muscular man.”

The MCU movies are some of my favourite movies. Ever. I know I’m not alone in that. And that’s part of what makes these movies so special. The energy in the theatre was palpable. Everyone was excited. It’s one of the biggest movies of the year. And it doesn’t disappoint. We get all the comedy and wit we’ve come to expect – especially since the hilarious Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy. Sure, the movie is full of its share of darkness and danger, but there are lighter portions within Infinity War to make the dark scenes a little easier to stomach. The balance is important, especially given the direction the film takes. Thor: Ragnarok was one of the most fun MCU movies, but Infinity War is by far the most dark. Some of the things I think could’ve been done differently or been avoided, and it would’ve been more organic to the characters and plot. But the moments that are meant to hit you, do. Oh boy do they ever.

Infinity War has to strike a tough balance of giving many characters ample screen time, and I think they do it well. Each character gets multiple scenes, so we’re not left feeling short changed. We’ve come to love these characters and these movies, so the stakes are high for audiences too. When we see our favourite characters in danger, we’re affected. We always have hope for them. But nothing can prepare you for what happens in Infinity War. And none of this impact would be possible without such an amazing cast. They play off each other well, and somehow with each film they seem to get better and better. The CGI is also fantastic, particularly for Thanos who is entirely CGI. All of these elements come together to make an unforgettable film.

“The Earth’s mightiest heroes.”

Avengers: Infinity War will be one of 2018’s most talked about films. It shocks audiences. It thrills them and makes them laugh. But it also leaves us wondering what will happen next. Infinity War is a big movie, and big things happen. While some things I feel were a little out of character, overall I really enjoyed this movie (as much as you can enjoy being stabbed in the heart). As always, wait til the end of the credits for an extra scene.

My Rating: 9/10
