Suit up: A legendary film for a timeless book

Gatsby opens on Christmas Day, 2012

Baz Luhrmann‘s greatly anticipated rendition of Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, will finally hit the big screen on December 25th next year. The plot follows an aspiring writer and Yale graduate, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who moves from the Midwest to New York City in 1922, after serving in World War One, in hopes of beginning a career in bonds. He is immediately seduced by the wealth and affluence of Manhattan’s high rollers – especially when he is invited to Mr.Gatsby’s mansion next door for an extravagant party.

Gatsby (Leo DiCaprio), although an Oxford graduate, had not always been wealthy. After serving as a soldier in the war, he was determined to build a lucrative career, buy a house in West Egg, and throw lavish parties in order to attract an old girlfriend who lives across the bay from him, Nick’s cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan).

Five years have passed since Gatsby and Daisy had to separate when he was enlisted. Daisy has since married a pompous, cheating, and aggressive man, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), and now has a young daughter. When Nick, Daisy’s cousin, moves in next door Gatsby is given the opportunity to reunite with his lost love.

If it’s anything like the book, this film will be sure to offer a close observation of the disguises, deceits, abuse, murder, vengeance, and mistresses surrounding the lives of six New Yorkers during the prohibition era.
