From the Slums to the Streets
When Gareth Evans released “The Raid: Redemption” in 2011, audiences and critics ate it up like a fresh slice of pie. I watch a lot of action films and “The Raid” is probably in my top three. The film kicks so much ass and doesn’t even break a sweat doing it. The fight scenes are fast and frantic as a flurry of fists dance about the screen and the shootout sections put you right in the middle of the action, almost scrambling for cover. Basically, if you haven’t seen this gem of a film, do it now. The idea of a sequel was always in the back of Evans’ mind and for the last year or so he’s been toying around with the idea of bringing it to fruition. After months of waiting, we finally have the first trailer for “The Raid 2: Berandal.” Check it out below:

If there’s anything Hollywood action films can learn from these films it’s this: Everything. This trailer, while short and offering little-to-no context or plot details, pummels us with quick, haunting shots and promises a thrill-ride of a film. I wasn’t sure how they could top the original but from the looks of it they’re aiming to surpass it by a million. Everything from the in-car fight to what appears to be a bloody subway setpiece gets me more and more excited for this film’s release. Perhaps the biggest point of speculation lies in the fact that the protagonist of the first film, Rama (Iko Uwais), finds himself in a locked cell and his vicious attack on a human-shaped outline may serve as a basis for a more personal conflict than the 20-on-100 battle we saw two years ago. Either way, my adrenaline is rushing and my heart rate is up.
What do you think? Are you excited for this long-awaited follow-up or do you think this looks too bloody to be good? Let us know in the comments!
