Who You Gonna Watch? Ghostbusters!

Written by Eryl McCaffrey September 23, 2011

It’s been 27 years since the three wacky phantom hunters took to the screen in Ivan Reitman’s 1984 hit Ghostbusters. But, that’s about to change.  Sony/Columbia has announced via the official Ghostbusters Facebook fan page that the classic will receive a theatrical rerelease next month. This comes of course, just in time for pumpkin smashing and candy overdoses.

Skeptics say this is a cheap trick to test the waters for a third instalment of the film, rumoured to start shooting this spring. Whether it’s a cheeky promotion tactic or sly marketing ploy, I don’t really care. All I know is, come October I’m grabbing my Proton Pack and heading down to the movie theatre to see one of the greatest demonic comedy-fantasies that ever was.

I wasn’t even a fetus when the original ghoul chasers gave birth to the supernatural comedy film genre. However, it rocked my socks when I saw it as a youngster and apparently thousands of other movie-goers agreed. It came in as the 32nd largest grossing film in U.S. box office history after its release, raking in the equivalent of US$528,600,000 in 2010 prices. With modern social media marketing platforms, movie blogs and countless entertainment shows, I’m sure the rerelease will draw in double the audience and revenue this time around.

More information is still pouring in; so as to where and exactly how Ghostbusters will be screened is unknown at this time. The Facebook page has been heavily plugging the big rerelease with the tagline “MASS HYSTERIA.” As well, the original trailer is on their fan page, with a tag at the end promoting a reshowing in October. So, we know Ghostbusters will be gracing the big screen once again around Halloween, “as an all-new digitally-restored release” (Digital Spy).

The hilariously awkward trio of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis will surely have audiences everywhere spouting out their famous catch phrases all over again. Several sources have reported that Ghostbusters III will begin shooting this spring, while others set the release date for Christmas of 2012.  If you’re like me and you can’t hold your that long, I’m guessing we’ll be sharing the tiny armrest at the theatre next month.  Stay tuned for updates!
