Top 5 Most Disturbingly Hilarious “Dexter” Scenes (NSFW)

Written by Guest November 20, 2011

“Dexter” is a show on Showtime about a blood splatter analyst who works at the Miami police department by day and kills criminals who escape the justice system by night.  The show focuses around his ability, and inability, to balance his life and his true nature. To me, “Dexter” at its best is when the writers take advantage of the darkness of the premise and truly make the viewers feel on edge. “Dexter” can create this suspense by nailing its ability to do black comedy, mostly to the credit of Michael C Hall’s great acting. In celebration of these memorably creepy moments as well as the recent announcement of the show getting two more seasons, here are the 5 most contextually disturbing yet hilarious scenes of “Dexter”.

5.) “I will not kill my sister”

How often have you wanted to hypothetically hurt your sibling? How often have you wanted to hypothetically hurt your room mate? What if your sibling is your room mate? Good for them as you are most likely not a secret mass murderer with an addiction to killing. Dexter would never hurt Deb, but him repeating “I will not kill my sister” over and over provides a quirky self-awareness to his relationship with her as well as his own true nature as a serial killer.

4.) “Surprise, Mother Fucker! “

Sgt. James Doakes is probably my favourite regular supporting character of the series. This is because he was right on the ball when thought there was something fucked up with Dexter Morgan. His colourful use of profane language and his badass demeanour made him a fun character to watch investigate his colleague. His most famous line that has sprouted many memes online is the classic “surprise mother fucker” quip. The viewer is not aware of his presence, so we are just as surprised as Dexter. In context with the scene, this is the closest Dexter came to getting caught by him in the first season, and it was at the most inconvenient time. Dexter had just rediscovered a key aspect of his past that triggered his psychotic behaviour while searching for his sister, Deb, who had been kidnapped by the Ice Truck Killer.

3.) The Trinity Killer’s Introduction

The fourth season started with Arthur Mitchell, The Trinity Killer, killing a young woman in a bathtub. John Lithgow is brilliantly casted as Trinity, twisting the viewers expectations of typically seeing the actor as a family man in “3rd Rock From the Sun” and a singer of songs for children. Despite me giving a slight chuckle at seeing John Lithgow stark nude, there is overall nothing  funny about this scene. What’s funny is how watching anything with John Lithgow ever again will never be the same after watching this scene. WARNING: This video is chalk full of disturbing content, nudity and blood.

2.) The Trinity Dance

At this point, Dexter knows Arthur Mitchell is a serial killer like himself. Instead of taking him out he tries to learn from The Trinity Killer how to balance a family life with a homicidal hobby. In this scene Trinity takes Dexter, under the alias of Kyle Butler, on a surprise out of town trip. The dance that Trinity does in excitement is something that Dexter would never do. Dexter hides feelings while Trinity lets them flow. The surprise trip is in fact a trip to Trinity’s childhood home where his sister was tragically killed. This death scene is something that Trinity recreated in all of his killings. Now, who wouldn’t want to dance in excitement to show a new friend this? Also, the online remix’s of the scene are also great:

1.) “Deb, I’m the Bay Harbour Butcher”

The main premise of season 2 of Dexter was that his handiwork of human remains had been found in the deep waters that he disposed them in, leading his department to lead a frantic investigation for the serial killer behind it. In the season 2 finale, as the investigation got closer and closer to him, he realized the worst part of it all is that his sister will have to find out about his dark secret some day. This not only is something that is relevant to the season, but the series as well. For myself, Deb finding out about Dexter’s secret is the moment I am looking forward to the most in the series.
