Top 5 TV Shows Returning Fall 2012

Written by Hana Elniwairi September 10, 2012

Continuing on from the last article listing five new TV shows to look forward to, I bring you five other TV shows, this time returning to your televisions. From comedy, to drama, and fantasy, these shows made their mark already, and left us wanting more. This fall, here are my top 5 returning TV shows.

5. New Girl (FOX)

Those of you who have read my other reviews of “New Girl” (See here and here) know that my opinion has not been stable. However, with a rather excellent conclusion to the first season, I look forward to what the second season brings. CeCe and Schmidt are broken up; are they going to stay that way, or . . . Then there is the budding relationship between Jesse and Nick, which we will probably see a lot more of, and never forget Winston, who always finds a way to bring humour even to the show’s more ‘serious’ episodes. “New Girl” returns to television on September 25th.

4. Once Upon a Time (ABC)

We’ve all enjoyed fairytales and the magical worlds they transport us to at some point in our lives; some of us simply could not move on, but “Once Upon a Time” assures us that we need not worry. Most lovers of storytelling will have enjoyed the way this show took the traditional fairytales we tell children and explored the tropes and possibilities there to make it into an adult show. With the finale of “Once Upon a Time”, it turns out that we might not need stories to get to the magic; the magic is coming back to our world. Catch the return of “Once Upon a Time” on September 30th.

3. The Walking Dead (AMC)

It was pretty much a no-brainer to include “The Walking Dead” in this list; the zombie apocalypse seems to be taking center stage, despite the fact that December 21st, 2012 and the world’s end are just around the corner. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what is happening with “The Walking Dead” as I’m only just starting to watch. But so far, the show has been good to me. There is a great mix of drama and suspense and thrill, and it all just works very well. There is not much to be said; if you like zombies, drama, and a suspenseful thriller, tune in on October 14th when “The Walking Dead” returns to television.

2. How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

There was a very difficult internal struggle occuring as I made the decision to put “How I Met Your Mother” in second, rather than first, place. But ultimately, I made this decision. “How I Met Your Mother” left us with a bit of a ‘shocker’ last season, in the reveal of Robin as Barney’s bride, but the road there was left hidden. This will possibly be explained in the upcoming season, but the creators of the show have a habit of leaving us all waiting just a little bit longer. At any rate, I look forward to more great performances by the cast, and entertaining plots and jokes to distract me from life. “How I Met Your Mother” returns to television on September 24th.

1. Revenge (ABC)

There are so many reasons why “Revenge” won the number one spot. Whether it is the amazing dramatic twists and turns of each storyline, the well-written intriguing characters and performances, or the cliffhanger ending we were left with at the end of the first season. I’m sure those who have waited with baited breaths since May for the premiere of the second season will understand what I mean. At any rate, the second season of “Revenge” is supposed to focus more on Emily re-evaluating herself, especially after a discovery made at the finale of season one, and I don’t expect it to be anything less than awesomely suspenseful and . . . vengeful (it’s horrible, I know!). “Revenge” will be returning on September 30th.

Honourable Mentions: Boardwalk Empire, 2 Broke Girls, 30 Rock
