We Eat Films’ Top 5 Movies of 2018

Written by Caitlin Cooper January 13, 2019

‘Tis the season to reflect on the year we’re leaving behind as we look forward to the year ahead. That means the team here at We Eat Films have put our heads together and voted on which movies we loved the most in 2018. From superheros to coming-of-age to horror and more, our top 5 movies of 2018 has it all.

5. Annihilation (Directed by Alex Garland)

2018 might be the year of big superhero films, but let’s not forget about the great female-lead films that have hit the big screen. Annihilation has a fantastic cast, including Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Lee to name a few. Despite some casting controversy, the film had a strong opening weekend and made an impression on We Eat Films staff. An environmental thriller that takes audiences on a wild ride, Annihilation is a film that made us take notice.

4. Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse (Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman)

Spider-Man is, arguably, one of the most popular superheroes (or at least the one we’ve seen countless films about). While audiences aren’t strangers to seeing the webbed hero on the big screen, we haven’t quite seen him like this before. With the recent popularity of the new live action Spider-Man, it’s no surprise that Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse was so well received. With unique and artistic graphics that feel reminiscent of comic style art, this film has a lot going for it. From a fun yet emotional plot to a great voice cast – including Zoe Kravitz and Jake Johnson -, this quickly became one of the most popular films of the year.

3. Paddington 2 (Directed by Paul King)

Sometimes all you need is a film about a talking bear who loves sandwiches and has a tendency to cause chaos. Paddington was such a success, so 2018’s sequel was anticipated by its fans. The film is full of heart, British humour, and pure fun. It’s hard to watch this film and not smile at Paddington’s antics as he tries his hand at odd jobs so he can buy a present for Aunt Lucy.

2. Love, Simon (Directed by Greg Berlanti)

Based on the bestselling and beloved novel by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon is a refreshing and sweet coming-of-age story that modern audiences have been craving. Whether you’re LGBTQ+, an ally to the community, or someone simply seeking a heartwarming story of coming out and falling in love, this film will pulled at your heartstrings. It certainly made us turn into heart eye emojis. With a stellar cast and a great screenplay that made improvements upon the book, this is a film meant to take you on a journey and leave you with a smile on your face. Some truly stunning lines make the movie so memorable, you’ll want to watch it again.

1. Avengers: Infinity War (Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo)

Is it really a surprise that the movie we all can’t stop thinking about was arguably the most popular and hyped movie of the year? Marvel knows how to get people to the theatre probably more than almost any other company with the plethora of MCU films. Infinity War was the movie everyone was talking about and planning to see months before its release, and dissecting and debating about for months after it hit the big screen. With stunning graphics, and intense plot – and a lot of pain as we saw our beloved characters face death, there’s really no competition. This year, we’ll see how it all ends in Avengers: Endgame.
